THE ROAD OF THE SOULS:  An evening of music

with film director and composer Pavel Urkiza

Saturday, May 9th 6:30-9:30pm

Annapolis Friends Meeting House  [ Click Here for Directions ]

Join us for an evening of live Cuban music to support the final steps of the music documentary "The Road of the Souls" (La Ruta de las Almas).  The evening will feature music by the Annapolis-based Cuban composer, musician, and film director Pavel Urkiza.

The Road of the Souls documentary is a journey through centuries and across continents that illustrates how music travels with migrations of people as a part of their spiritual and cultural belongings.  Urkiza interviews and records over 80 artists from Ibero-America -- an extensive swath of countries stretching from Persia to Patagonia.  A unique documentary approach, the film's soundtrack is composed by the director himself and played by the musicians he interviews.  These artists tell their experience of their own soul's journey through generations and demonstrate how art is a path to peace, understanding, and the celebration of differences.

The evening will include a screening of the documentary trailer, live music by the director and composer of the film, refreshments and a brief discussion about the creative process and making of the film.

Admission to the concert will be accepted at the door. Suggested donation is $15.

MORE ABOUT THE ARTIST:

Pavel Urkiza (www.pavelurkiza.com) is a Cuban musician, composer, producer, and arranger of great expressiveness, creativity, and connection with world music cultures. Pavel has produced over 25 albums, including his own and those of other well-known contemporary Latin and Spanish musicians.

Recognized as a master musician for his contributions to contemporary Afro-Cuban music he is considered one of Cuba’s most skilled and innovative composers and performers in the diaspora. His music is intimately rooted in traditional Cuban rhythms and melodies, yet is distinguished by his own personal rhythmic style flavored by the Afro-Cuban, traditional, jazz, flamenco, as well as Brazilian, Afro-beat, Caribbean, Mediterranean, Oriental and Indian rhythms. Widely known for his duo "Gema y Pavel", he now creates and interprets as a solo-artist in collaboration with musicians from around the globe.

His most recent accomplishment is the musical documentary, La Ruta de las Almas, a film illustrating the deep connections among music and musicians from across the Mediterranean and Latin America. Along his journey to uncover these musical roots, he records and interviews over fifty musicians, simultaneously creating a CD of original compositions inspired by the history and deep connections of musical traditions from the region he and others call “Ibero-America”.
